For Participants

Who can participate in MESA events?

MESA events welcome runners, walkers, first-time participants, experienced athletes, families, and spectators. Each event reflects the community hosting it and offers a range of ways to participate.

Do I need to be an elite runner?

No. MESA events celebrate participation, personal achievement, and community involvement at every level.

Are events family-friendly?

Yes. Many MESA races are paired with running festivals that include food vendors, community organizations, and activities that welcome families and spectators.

Is there a time limit?

No. MESA events do not enforce a strict time cutoff. Race operations, volunteers, and course support remain in place until each runner has crossed the finish line or has informed race staff that they are unable to complete the race.

Our priority is participant safety, dignity, and a positive experience for everyone on the course.

First-Time Runners

I’ve never run a race before — can I really do this?

Yes. Many participants at MESA events are first-time runners or walkers. Our events are designed to be welcoming, supportive, and approachable, whether you’re running your first mile or your fiftieth race.

What distance should I choose as a beginner?

Choose the distance that feels right for you. Many first-time participants start with a 5K or use a walk/run approach. There is no expectation to run the entire distance — finishing in your own way is what matters.

Will I be the only beginner?

Not at all. You’ll be surrounded by participants of all experience levels, along with volunteers and spectators who are there to encourage you.

What if I need to stop or take breaks?

That’s completely fine. You may slow down, walk, or stop as needed. Volunteers and race staff are available along the course to provide support.

Do you offer training resources?

Yes. MESA provides training videos for first-time runners and for participants moving up in distance — whether you’re preparing for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, or longer event. These resources are designed to help runners train safely, build confidence, and understand what to expect on race day.

Where do I find the training videos?

Training videos are available through Lifestyle Sports Global’s Video Resources page, which includes guidance for first-time runners and for those moving up from a 5K to a 10K, half marathon, or longer distance.
